About The Course
Principles
of Biology I and II -- BIOL 100-102 --
comprise a year-long introductory course in the biological sciences, at a level
appropriate for continuing on as a Biology major or for preparing to pursue professional
studies in the biomedical sciences. Students who successfully complete the full two-semester sequence will receive
9.0 credits toward Hunter College's Stage 2/E (Broad Exposure:
Natural Science). Students who successfully complete BIOL 100 only will receive
4.5 credits toward Stage 2/E. Completion of BIOL
100 is a prerequisite for registering for BIOL 102. Students who complete the two-semester sequence will
also receive 3 credits toward the Hunter College Pluralism & Diversity
Requirement, Group C or Group D.

Biol 100 (4.5
credits) is offered in the Fall only. The course, with accompanying lab, introduces the
chemical basis of life; basic structure and function of pro- and eukaryotic cells;
bioenergetics; Mendelian and molecular genetics; development and mechanisms of control of
gene expression at all levels.
Biol 102 (4.5
credits) is offered in the Spring only. The second semester, with accompanying lab,
introduces organism structure; homeostasis; internal transport in plants and animals;
signaling molecules; osmoregulation; motility; reproduction; behavioral
biology.
